EU has to come clean on costs of green transition
  + stars: | 2023-07-18 | by ( Pierre Briancon | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +8 min
European Union governments have agreed on the strategy, but they tend to paper over the short-term economic costs of the green transition. French economist Jean Pisani-Ferry has compared the impact of the green transition to an economic shock equivalent to the sharp spikes in oil prices in the 1970s. But unlike previous shocks triggered by geopolitical instability or trade wars, the green transition has been initiated and managed by governments, and largely financed by them. Germany looks like the country most able to afford the green transition, but its over-emphasis on regulation on environmental matters is running into fierce opposition. On Sunday Paolo Gentiloni, the EU economy commissioner, told the Financial Times that Europe will have to fund its own industrial green transition.

Bulb bailout exposes UK’s pseudo power market
  + stars: | 2022-12-23 | by ( George Hay | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +4 min
Bulb is the biggest of dozens of flaky British power suppliers which opted not to hedge their future costs when energy prices were cheap. The Office for Budget Responsibility expects the saga to cost taxpayers 6.5 billion pounds. Octopus itself thinks the loan could be more like 2.4 billion pounds, as wholesale prices have recently fallen. If that’s correct, regular payments by Bulb customers will cover the cost. With retail power prices fixed and the government on the hook for higher wholesale costs, Britain’s privatised power industry is operating in anything but a free market.
The sudden reversal of almost all tax cuts announced just three weeks ago could put financial markets on more stable footing. Yields on 30-year UK government bonds, which move opposite prices, have dipped to 4.34% after topping 5% last week. But concerns about the economy are resurfacing in lieu of angst about the country’s financial markets — though on that front, too, uncertainty remains. The specter of additional volatility in financial markets still lingers. And restoring investor confidence in UK assets will be an effort that takes time — especially as questions about Truss’ political future swirl.
Massive fiscal U-turn leaves UK in political funk
  + stars: | 2022-10-17 | by ( Pierre Briancon | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +4 min
By the tax year ending in April 2027 this should help the government claw back 32 billion pounds of the 45 billion pounds a year Kwarteng and Truss had planned. Beyond that, the scheme, which the government had estimated might cost some 60 billion pounds over six months, will become less generous. The pound strengthened against the U.S. dollar while yields on 10-year UK government bonds declined by nearly 45 basis points. But they remain at 12-year highs, suggesting that the UK has much to do to regain credibility with global investors. Government spending cuts will also be required to narrow a hole in public finances that the Sunday Times reported was as big as 72 billion pounds ($81 billion).
